I keep on forgetting to discuss the books that come through the door but at the moment there are so many it is hard to keep up. However, I do still buy books not related to my thesis. Well I picked this one up cheap at The National Archives yesterday; I am a student and always on the look out for a bargain.

Robin Prior and Trevor Wilson, Command on the Western Front: The Military Career of Sir Henry Rawlinson, 1914-1918 (Pen and Sword, 2004: Blackwells, 1992) – As the blurb of this book contends this is not a biography of Rawlinson but rather an attempt to use him as a prism through which to examine the development of the British Army on the Western Front. Very much what I would describe as an Operational Military Biography i.e concentrating on his career on the Western Front rather than much of the ephemeral material we get in standard biographies. A useful example of what can be done with regards to examining commanders and their development. However, I suspect the time is ripe for a re-examination of 4th Army’s performance as a whole.
